Elio Altare
This wine is ruby-red with garnet reflections. Intense aromas of cherry, plum, clove and cinnamon eminate from the glass. Fresh and intense, the berry/cherry fruit is slightly offset be a slight hint of roasted citrus. Smooth tannic structure and great balance make this wine an early pleasure.
Wine Advocate
Altare's 2004 Barolo is a sweet, dense wine loaded with considerable fruit that hides the tannic structure that lurks underneath. Licorice, menthol, baking spices and dark red fruit all make an appearance in this superbly well-proportioned Barolo. Sweet, ripe tannins, and a lingering note of mint give this wine a beautiful sense of lift on the finish. Altare's Barolo was once quite representative of La Morra, but the recent addition of vineyards in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga in the blend make this a very different - dare I say it - almost traditional expression of Barolo. It is a lovely wine and is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024.

Wine Enthusiast
Elio Altare is among the most important producers of the La Morra area of Barolo and this non-cru wine shows his talents. There are smoky notes of roasted hazelnut and chocolate that frame lively aromas of cassis and red currants. There's great depth and delicacy here and the wine boasts polished tannins and a long finish. Drink after 2010.

Sustainable practices incorporate organic standards and may exceed them and include ecologically and socially sound business practices such as fair pay for farm workers and energy conservation.
Screw Cap
Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
No Sulfites
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.

I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
